ADDITIONAL ELEMENTARY SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES

Freedom School (six weeks):

•Rooted in the American Civil Rights Movement

•Program focuses on courageous efforts of youth to make a difference

•Training provided by Children’s Defense Fund


•SCUSD teachers and agency staff work together to deliver Integrated Reading Curriculum

•Weekly family nights

•Freedom School 2021 sites (total of four):

-John Still K-8 (Rose Family Creative Empowerment Center)

-Parkway Elementary (Rose Family Creative Empowerment Center)

-Susan B. Anthony (Rose Family Creative Empowerment Center)

-Leataata Floyd (Roberts Family Development Center)

All programs will include the following restorative practices:

•Focus on Relationships: Safe space to build mutual relationships with fellow students and adults. Enrichment activities will provide opportunities of collaboration, thus building trusting relationships among peers.  Staff will focus on community agreements in order to address discipline issues.

•Addressing Mental Health:  Social workers will do circles and check ins addressing well-being, safety, trauma, anxiety, loss of stability, how to manifest feelings, and will work on building trusting relationships.

•Connecting with Families and Communities: Parent education nights and regular check ins with parents/guardians.

•High-dosage of Tutoring: Teachers will work with small groups of students to accelerate classroom learning.

Summer Education Innovation Center (five weeks):

The Summer Education Innovation Centers are free and will operate for 5 weeks: June 21, 2021 to July 30, 2021. Camps will be closed July 5, - 9, 2021 for the 4th of July holiday. The Summer Education Innovation Centers will offer a variety of integrated hands-on experiences such as arts, social emotional learning, outdoor education, physical activities, and science experiments!

These Centers are designed to reignite students interest in learning and WELCOME them back to school campuses. Sessions will be in person.

• Eligibility: Students in grades 3 - 8 who reside in Sacramento county
• Hours: Monday through Friday, 8:00 A.M. – 4:00 P.M.
• Meals: Breakfast and lunch will be provided at no cost.
