Summer Matters@SCUSD-Elementary

Summer Matters@SCUSD-Elementary is a stimulating 5-week summer learning program that will give your incoming 1st through 6th grade child the opportunity to participate in a meaningful and engaging summer learning experience to mitigate learning loss and accelerate classroom learning and equip them with the skills to transition and succeed in the 2021-2022 school year.  Summer Matters@SCUSD-Elementary will provide a combination of high-dose tutoring and enrichment activities such as music, dance, painting and theatre arts.

The Summer Matters@SCUSD-Elementary program will operate Monday through Friday, 8:00am-2:30pm from June 28th to July 30th. All students will be provided with a daily breakfast and lunch meal as a part of the program.

Each of these sites will serve as a Community School to allow students from surrounding SCUSD schools to enroll. Applicants are responsible for their own transportation to and from the program.

All programs will include the following restorative practices:

•Focus on Relationships: Safe space to build mutual relationships with fellow students and adults. Enrichment activities will provide opportunities of collaboration, thus building trusting relationships among peers.  Staff will focus on community agreements in order to address discipline issues.

•Addressing Mental Health:  Social workers will do circles and check ins addressing well-being, safety, trauma, anxiety, loss of stability, how to manifest feelings, and will work on building trusting relationships.

•Connecting with Families and Communities: Parent education nights and regular check ins with parents/guardians.

•High-dosage of Tutoring: Teachers will work with small groups of students to accelerate classroom learning.

Student Eligibility:

Summer Matters@SCUSD programs are open for all students, however below are the priority groups:

Foster Youth – All elementary and middle school foster Youth Families will receive the invite to enroll in Summer Matters@SCUSD-Elementary and Summer Matters@SCUSD-Middle programs. Foster Youth Services will be responsible for reaching out to families.

Students Experiencing Homelessness: Homeless Services will send the application link to all of their families.

Students with Special Needs: YDSS will work with Special Ed Services to invite students who are enrolled in  Extended School Year (ESY) program.

In addition, if we have more applications than the available slots, at that time we will intentionally select the students who are in the following categories: EL students, disengaged students based on the attendance, and students with special needs.
